ASTM A516 Grade 70 Pressure Vessel Steel Plate ASME SA20 SA20M ASME SA516 Grade 70 plate Normalized
We supply both
SA516-70N reffers to normalized steel plate product, for steel plate and sheet thinner than 40mm we normally supply them as rolled-steel coil.
Plates with thickness above 40mm are supplied normalized.
ASTM A516 Gr 70 Rolled Plate is a medium carbon alloy that contains manganese, phosphorus, sulfur, and silicon. These added alloying elements provide increased strength and versatility in highly demanding applications such as pressure vessels requiring moderate to lower temperatures where notch toughness is essential.
ASTM A516 Gr 70 also calles ASTM A516 grade 485 steel plate, which means the tensile strength is more than 485mpa.
A516 (ASTM A516, ASME SA 516) is a pressure vessel quality (PVQ) steel plate conforming to ASTM A516-70. When normalized above 1-1/2″ thick, it has improved impact toughness. A516 plate is one of the strongest and most versatile PVQ plates commercially available.
ASTM a516 Grade 70 steel is a versatile pressure vessel plate that’s well-suited to low and moderate temperature applications, making it an ideal material for industrial boilers and pressure vessels. This type of steel plate delivers reliable performance in low temperatures, offers good weldability, and boasts superb notch toughness, making it highly suitable for boiler plate fabrication.
Standard Specification for Pressure Vessel Plates, Carbon Steel, for Moderate- and Lower-Temperature Service
This specification covers carbon steel plates intended primarily for service in welded pressure vessels where improved notch toughness is important. According to different strength levels, the plates are available in four grades: Grades 55, 60, 65, and 70. The maximum thickness of plates is limited only by the capacity of the composition to meet the specified mechanical property requirements. The steel shall be killed and shall conform to fine austenitic grain size requirements. The mechanical properties such as tensile strength, yield strength, and elongation shall be determined by a tension test for the plates.
Scope
1.1 This specification covers carbon steel plates intended primarily for service in welded pressure vessels where improved notch toughness is important.
1.2 Plates under this specification are available in four grades having different strength levels as follows:
Grade U.S. [SI] |
Tensile Strength, |
55 [380] |
55–75 [380–515] |
60 [415] |
60–80 [415–550] |
65 [450] |

1.3 The maximum thickness of plates is limited only by the capacity of the composition to meet the specified mechanical property requirements; however, current practice normally limits the maximum thickness of plates furnished under this specification as follows:
Grade U.S. [SI] |
Maximum Thickness, |
55 [380] |
12 [305] |
60 [415] |
8 [205] |
65 [450] |
8 [205] |
70 [485] |
8 [205] |
1.4 For plates produced from coil and furnished without heat treatment or with stress relieving only, the additional requirements, including additional testing requirements and the reporting of additional test results of Specification A20/A20M apply.

Delivery State:
SA516-70N reffers to normalized steel plate product, for steel plate and sheet thinner than 40mm we normally supply them as rolled-steel coil. Plates with thickness above 40mm are supplied normalized. SA516 grade 70 steel plate density is 0.284 cu/in3 (7861 kg/m3).
ASME SA 516-carbon steel plates are manufactured with mill certification following EN10204 3.1 or EN10204 3.2 standard version.
How to choose the right material Between SA516 Grade 70 Plate and SA516 Grade 60 Plate?
An iron, chromium, nickel, and molybdenum alloy with a yield strength of 70,000 psi is used to make A516 GR.70 steel plates. It is employed in various sectors of the building industry, most notably the auto sector. Iron, chromium, nickel, and manganese alloy with the yield strength of 60,000 psi is used to make A516 GR.60 steel plate. Due to its high tensile strength, immunity to corrosion, and weldability (it can withstand temperatures of up to 2200°F), it is also employed in the construction sector.
As a result of its high chromium concentration and low carbon content, A516 GR.70 steel plate is perfect for use in engines and other high-pressure or severe applications.
A516 GR.60 has higher carbon content than A516 GR.70 and has lower chromium content than A516 GR.70; it is, therefore, less resistant to corrosion than A516 GR.70 but still offers good resistance to oxidation when exposed to air at atmospheric pressure (approximately 14 psi).
