What Is a Baffle Plate?

A baffle plate is an internal component installed inside a shell-and-tube heat exchanger or pressure vessel.

Its primary functions are:

  • Supporting tube bundles
  • Preventing tube vibration
  • Directing shell-side fluid flow
  • Increasing turbulence
  • Improving heat transfer efficiency
  • Reducing dead zones inside the shell

Without properly designed baffles, fluid may flow directly through the shell without sufficient contact with the tube surface, resulting in poor heat transfer performance.
