Standard Specification for Carbon and Low-Alloy Steel Forgings, Requiring Notch Toughness Testing for Piping Components
ASTM A350 LF2 Flanges are manufactured to corresponding ASME or API dimensional standards. The forgings may be made from ingots, blooms, billets, slabs or bars through hot-forging process. The steel shall be fully killed and fine-grain. ASTM A350 covers several grades and classes: Grade LF1, Grade LF2, Grade LF3, Grade LF5, Grade LF6, Grade LF9, Grade LF787; and Class 1, Class 2, Class 3.

The sum of Cu, Ni, Cr, V, and Mo shall not exceed 1.00% on heat analysis. The sum of Cr and Mo shall not exceed 0.32% on heat analysis. By agreement, the limit for Nb may be increased up to 0.05 % on heat analysis and 0.06 % on product analysis. The carbon equivalent CE = C + Mn/6 + (Cr + Mo + V)/5 + (Ni + Cu)/15. For both Class 1 and Class 2 of ASTM A350 LF2, if the maximum thickness of the work piece is less than or equal to 2″, the CE shall not exceed 0.47; if the the maximum thickness of the work piece is greater than 2″, the CE shall not exceed 0.48.

ASTM A350 Grade LF2 Flange manufacturing process
Forging Temperature for this material should be 900 – 1200oC
Soak times should be kept to a minimum to avoid heavy scaling, but sufficient time should be given to allow centre
to achieve furnace temperature. After forging pieces should be allowed to cool in still air.

ASTM A350 Grade LF2 is a general Carbon steel usually supplied in the Normalised, Normalised and Tempered or. Quench and Tempered condition
Normalising – Heat to 860 – 920°C for a time commensurate with ruling section, Air cool (If Required)
Hardening – Heat to 890 – 960oC for a time commensurate with ruling section and quench in Water.
Tempering – Re-heat to 590oC Minimum as required, dependent on final required properties. Hold for a time
commensurate with the ruling section and cool in still in air.

the hardness to be 197 HB maximum and this meets the requirements for carbon steel forgings in NACE MR0175/ISO 15156-2.

Charpy V-notch impact test is required for ASTM A350 LF2 Flange to determine the notch toughness of the work piece. The Charpy V-notch impact test shall be conducted in accordance with ASTM A370 or ASTM A1058. Standard test specimens shall be prepared first, the cross section of which shall be 10 mm x 10 mm. Three pieces of test specimens of each heat lot shall be prepared. Generally, theminimum applicable temperaturefor Class 1 of ASTM A350 LF2 is -46°C [-50°F], while it is 0°C [-18°F] for Class 2 of ASTM A350 LF2. The minimum applicable temperatures are also the standard impact test temperatures for standard-size specimens.
