ASTM A182 F316Ti Flanges | UNS S31635 / EN 1.4571

A182-A182M F316Ti flanges are forged austenitic stainless steel flanges manufactured from titanium-stabilized 316Ti stainless steel, identified as UNS S31635 and EN 1.4571 / X6CrNiMoTi17-12-2.

316Ti contains chromium, nickel and molybdenum together with titanium stabilization. The titanium addition helps reduce chromium carbide precipitation during welding and elevated-temperature exposure, improving resistance to intergranular corrosion.

F316Ti forged flanges are widely used in chemical processing, petrochemical plants, refineries, heat exchangers and elevated-temperature process piping.

What Is ASTM A182 F316Ti?

ASTM A182 F316Ti is a forged stainless steel grade used for flanges and other pressure-containing forged components.

Key characteristics include:

  • Good general corrosion resistance
  • Good pitting and crevice-corrosion resistance
  • Improved resistance to intergranular corrosion
  • Good weldability
  • Good toughness
  • Good elevated-temperature stability
  • Good fabrication performance

The main advantage of 316Ti is titanium stabilization rather than universally higher corrosion resistance than 316L.

Chemical Composition

Typical UNS S31635 chemistry includes:

Element Requirement
Carbon, C 0.08% max
Manganese, Mn 2.00% max
Silicon, Si 0.75% max
Phosphorus, P 0.045% max
Sulfur, S 0.030% max
Chromium, Cr 16.0–18.0%
Nickel, Ni 10.0–14.0%
Molybdenum, Mo 2.0–3.0%
Nitrogen, N 0.10% max
Titanium, Ti 5 × (C + N) min., 0.70% max
Iron, Fe Balance

Actual heat chemistry is reported on the Material Test Certificate.

Mechanical Properties

Typical minimum room-temperature requirements include:

Property Requirement
Tensile Strength 515 MPa / 75 ksi min
Yield Strength 205 MPa / 30 ksi min
Elongation 35% min
Density Approx. 8.0 g/cm³

Mechanical properties depend on product size and heat-treatment condition.

Corrosion Resistance

316Ti provides good resistance in many industrial and chemical environments.

Molybdenum improves resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion, while titanium stabilization helps improve resistance to intergranular corrosion after welding or prolonged thermal exposure.

316Ti can be used in moderate chloride-containing environments, but it is not immune to chloride pitting or stress-corrosion cracking.

For severe seawater or high-temperature chloride service, duplex, super duplex or higher-alloy materials may be more suitable.

ASME B16.5 F316Ti Flanges

ASTM A182 F316Ti flanges can be manufactured to ASME B16.5 dimensional requirements.

Typical range:

Item Supply Range
Size NPS 1/2″ to NPS 24″
Pressure Class 150, 300, 400, 600, 900, 1500, 2500
Facing RF, RTJ, FF where applicable
Material ASTM A182 F316Ti / UNS S31635

For larger diameters, ASME B16.47 flanges can be supplied where applicable.

EN 1092-1 1.4571 Flanges

EN 1.4571 flanges can also be supplied to EN 1092-1.

Typical configurations include:

  • Type 11 – Weld Neck Flange
  • Type 05 – Blind Flange
  • Type 01 – Plate Flange

Typical pressure ratings include:

  • PN6
  • PN10
  • PN16
  • PN25
  • PN40
  • PN63
  • PN100

The flange type, facing and PN rating should be clearly stated on the purchase order.

Forged Flange vs Plate Flange

ASTM A182 F316Ti applies to forged or rolled pressure components such as forged flanges.

Plate flanges are manufactured from plate material and may use ASTM A240 / ASME SA-240 UNS S31635 material.

Therefore, ASTM A182 F316Ti forged flanges and ASTM A240 316Ti plate flanges should be treated as different manufacturing routes.

316Ti vs 316L

316Ti and 316L are both molybdenum-alloyed austenitic stainless steels.

Item 316Ti 316L
UNS S31635 S31603
EN No. 1.4571 1.4404
Stabilization Titanium Low Carbon
Main Advantage Thermal stabilization Excellent welded corrosion performance
General Corrosion Resistance Good Good
Typical Use Elevated-temperature / stabilized service General welded process service

316Ti is not automatically more corrosion resistant than 316L.

Material selection should consider temperature, fabrication method and actual service environment.
