TP304 vs TP304L Stainless Steel Pipe

The main difference between TP304 and TP304L is the maximum carbon content.

TP304L is the low-carbon version of TP304 and is commonly selected for welded piping systems where improved resistance to sensitization and intergranular corrosion after welding is required.

Property TP304 TP304L
UNS S30400 S30403
Carbon, max. 0.08% 0.035%*
Chromium 18.0–20.0% 18.0–20.0%
Nickel 8.0–11.0% 8.0–13.0%
Tensile Strength, min. 515 MPa 485 MPa
Yield Strength, min. 205 MPa 170 MPa

*Special carbon limits may apply to certain small-diameter or thin-wall products under ASTM A312/A312M.

Chemical Composition

Typical ASTM A312 chemical requirements for TP304 and TP304L are:

Element TP304 TP304L
C 0.08 max 0.035 max
Mn 2.00 max 2.00 max
P 0.045 max 0.045 max
S 0.030 max 0.030 max
Si 1.00 max 1.00 max
Cr 18.0–20.0 18.0–20.0
Ni 8.0–11.0 8.0–13.0

Final acceptance should always follow the specified ASTM A312/A312M edition and purchase specification.

304/304L Dual Certified Pipe

TP304/304L dual-certified stainless steel pipe is widely available.

A dual-certified material has chemistry compatible with the lower-carbon requirements of TP304L while also meeting the mechanical property requirements applicable to TP304.

Dual certification must be confirmed by the actual Material Test Certificate (MTC) and should not be assumed from the product description alone.

Heat Treatment

ASTM A312 pipe is supplied in the required heat-treated condition.

For TP304 and TP304L, solution heat treatment is generally performed at a minimum temperature of approximately 1040°C (1900°F) followed by rapid cooling.

Proper solution treatment helps:

  • Restore corrosion resistance
  • Maintain an austenitic microstructure
  • Dissolve chromium carbides
  • Provide consistent mechanical properties
  • Improve performance after hot or cold working

Applications of TP304/304L Seamless Pipe

ASTM A312 TP304 and TP304L seamless pipes are widely used in:

  • Chemical processing
  • Petrochemical piping
  • Food and beverage processing
  • Pharmaceutical equipment
  • Water treatment systems
  • Pulp and paper plants
  • Power generation
  • General industrial piping
  • Heat exchangers
  • Process equipment

For highly chloride-rich environments such as seawater, TP316L, duplex stainless steel or other higher-alloy materialsmay provide better pitting and crevice-corrosion resistance depending on service conditions.

Inspection & Testing

ASTM A312 TP304/304L seamless pipes can be supplied with project-specific inspection and certification.

Available inspection may include:

  • EN 10204 3.1 Material Test Certificate
  • Chemical composition analysis
  • Tensile testing
  • Dimensional inspection
  • Visual inspection
  • Hydrostatic testing
  • Nondestructive electric testing
  • PMI testing when specified
  • Third-party inspection when required

Each pipe can be marked and traced according to heat number, material grade, dimensions, standard and purchase-order requirements.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is ASTM A312 TP304 pipe?

ASTM A312 TP304 pipe is an austenitic chromium-nickel stainless steel pipe manufactured according to ASTM A312/A312M requirements for high-temperature and general corrosive service.

What is the difference between TP304 and TP304L?

The primary difference is carbon content. TP304L contains less carbon, reducing the risk of sensitization and intergranular corrosion associated with welding or certain thermal exposures.

Can TP304 and TP304L be dual certified?

Yes. 304/304L dual-certified material is common when the chemical composition satisfies the TP304L requirements while the mechanical properties also satisfy TP304 requirements.

Is ASTM A312 TP304L suitable for welded piping systems?

Yes. TP304L is commonly selected for welded stainless steel piping because its lower carbon content reduces susceptibility to sensitization during welding. Final material selection should still consider temperature, fluid composition and corrosion conditions.
