What Is Alloy 600 UNS N06600?

Alloy 600 is a nickel-chromium-iron alloy developed for applications requiring both corrosion resistance and good performance at elevated temperatures.

The high nickel content provides resistance to many organic and inorganic compounds and gives the alloy particularly good resistance to chloride-ion stress-corrosion cracking.

Chromium improves resistance to:

  • High-temperature oxidation
  • Sulfur-containing environments
  • Oxidizing chemical solutions
  • Carburizing and nitriding environments under suitable service conditions

Alloy 600 also maintains useful mechanical properties across a wide temperature range and can be used in applications from cryogenic temperatures to high-temperature industrial equipment.

Alloy 600 Chemical Composition

Typical ASTM B168 composition limits for UNS N06600 include:

Element Composition, wt.%
Nickel + Cobalt 72.0 min
Chromium (Cr) 14.0–17.0
Iron (Fe) 6.0–10.0
Carbon (C) 0.15 max
Manganese (Mn) 1.00 max
Silicon (Si) 0.50 max
Sulfur (S) 0.015 max
Copper (Cu) 0.50 max

The combination of approximately 72% minimum nickel and 14–17% chromium is central to the corrosion and high-temperature performance of Alloy 600.

ASTM B168 Alloy 600 Mechanical Properties

For annealed hot-rolled UNS N06600 plate, typical ASTM B168 minimum room-temperature requirements include:

Property Minimum Requirement
Tensile Strength 550 MPa / 80 ksi
0.2% Yield Strength 240 MPa / 35 ksi
Elongation 30%

Mechanical requirements may vary according to product form, temper and applicable specification, so final acceptance should follow the purchase order and specified ASTM B168 edition.

Corrosion & High-Temperature Performance

Alloy 600 plate is widely selected where both heat resistance and corrosion resistance are required.

Important characteristics include:

  • High resistance to chloride-ion stress-corrosion cracking
  • Good resistance to high-purity water
  • Good resistance to many caustic alkali solutions
  • Good oxidation resistance at elevated temperatures
  • Resistance to carburizing and nitriding atmospheres
  • Good strength at both low and elevated temperatures
  • Good fabrication and welding characteristics

Alloy 600 has been used in applications involving temperatures from cryogenic conditions to above 1000°C, but the maximum allowable operating temperature depends on mechanical load, atmosphere, design code and required service life.

Oxidation resistance should not be interpreted as the allowable design temperature for pressure equipment.

Applications of Alloy 600 Plate & Sheet

ASTM B168 N06600 plate, sheet and strip are commonly used for:

  • Industrial furnace components
  • Heat-treatment equipment
  • Furnace muffles and fixtures
  • Chemical processing equipment
  • Caustic alkali handling systems
  • Reaction vessels
  • Heat exchangers
  • Nuclear engineering components
  • High-temperature ducting and shields
  • Petrochemical equipment
  • Thermal-processing equipment
  • Energy and environmental engineering
  • High-temperature automotive components

Alloy 600 vs Alloy 601

Alloy 600 and Alloy 601 are both nickel-chromium alloys, but they are optimized for different service requirements.

Item Alloy 600 Alloy 601
UNS N06600 N06601
Main Alloy System Ni-Cr-Fe Ni-Cr-Fe-Al
Aluminum Addition Low Higher / intentional
Chloride SCC Resistance Excellent Good
High-Temperature Oxidation Very Good Enhanced
Typical Positioning Corrosion + heat service Severe oxidation service

Alloy 601 is not simply a higher grade of Alloy 600. The correct alloy depends on operating temperature, atmosphere, corrosion conditions and mechanical requirements.

ASTM B168 vs ASME SB-168

ASTM B168 is the ASTM material specification covering Alloy 600 plate, sheet and strip.

ASME SB-168 is the corresponding ASME material specification commonly referenced for materials used in ASME pressure-equipment applications.

When material is ordered for pressure vessels or other code-controlled equipment, the required ASME Code edition, material specification and certification requirements should be stated in the purchase order.

Plate vs Sheet vs Strip

ASTM B168 covers three flat-rolled product forms:

  • Plate – Generally thicker flat-rolled material used for fabricated equipment and structural components.
  • Sheet – Thinner flat-rolled material supplied in wider formats.
  • Strip – Relatively narrow flat-rolled material, often supplied in coil form.

The applicable product classification should be determined according to ASTM B168 dimensions and purchase requirements.

Inspection & Certification

ASTM B168 Alloy 600 materials can be supplied with:

  • EN 10204 3.1 Material Test Certificate
  • Chemical composition analysis
  • Tensile testing
  • Dimensional inspection
  • Surface inspection
  • PMI testing when specified
  • Ultrasonic testing for plate when required
  • Grain-size examination when applicable
  • Third-party inspection
  • Full heat-number traceability

Frequently Asked Questions

What is ASTM B168 UNS N06600?

ASTM B168 UNS N06600 is a specification and material designation for Alloy 600 nickel-chromium-iron plate, sheet and strip used in corrosion-resistant and high-temperature applications.

Is Alloy 600 the same as Inconel 600?

UNS N06600 is the standardized alloy designation. INCONEL® alloy 600 is a registered trade name associated with Special Metals Corporation. In commercial piping and plate markets, “Alloy 600” and “Inconel 600” are often used to describe UNS N06600 material.

What is Alloy 600 plate used for?

Alloy 600 plate is commonly used for furnace equipment, chemical processing, caustic service, heat exchangers, nuclear engineering and other high-temperature components.

Is Alloy 600 suitable for high-temperature applications?

Yes. Alloy 600 has very good oxidation resistance and retains useful mechanical properties at elevated temperatures. Actual allowable temperature must be determined according to the process atmosphere, mechanical stress and applicable engineering design code.
