Nitronic 50®stainless steel is an austenitic stainless steel with a blend of strength and corrosion resistance that is higher than stainless steel grades 316, 316/316L, 317, and 317/317L .
The high strength, corrosion resistance, and low magnetic permeability of this alloy allows it to be used as a material for medical implants.
Unlike many austenitic stainless steels,NITRONIC 50 does not become magnetic when cold
worked or cooled to sub-zero temperatures. High-Strength (HS) NITRONIC 50 Stainless Steel has a yield strength about three to four times that of Type 316 stainless steel.
HIGH STRENGTH (HS) CONDITION
The superior strength of NITRONIC 50 Stainless Steel bars is due to special hot rolling and is size-dependent, approaching that of annealed bars with sizes over 76.2 mm (3 in.) diameter. This process results in mechanical properties that are superior to Annealed material, with Rp0.2 (0.2% YS) in range 415 – 725 MPa depending on the diameter. Also this condition is non-magnetic and is useful for applications in a wide range of temperatures, from -196 – 650 °C
(-320 – 1200 °F), according to Section VIII of the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code.
