ASTM A182 F9 Forgings Specification

ASTM A182 F9 Forgings – High-Performance Chromium-Molybdenum Alloy Steel

Grade ASTM A182 F9 materials are premium chromium-molybdenum (Cr-Mo) alloy steel forgings designed for high-temperature and high-pressure applications. Manufactured in accordance with ASTM A182 / ASME SA182, Grade F9 provides excellent creep resistance, oxidation resistance, and mechanical strength, making it ideal for critical service environments.

This specification is widely used in power generation, oil & gas, petrochemical, refinery, and pressure equipment industries.

ASTM A182 Standard Overview

ASTM A182 is the standard specification for forged or rolled alloy and stainless steel flanges, forged fittings, valves, and components intended for elevated-temperature service.

ASTM A182 F9 Material Specification

  • Standard: ASTM A182 / ASME SA182

  • Grade: F9

  • Product Forms: Forgings, Flanges, Fittings, Valves, Components

  • UNS Number: K90941

ASTM A182 F9 forgings are commonly selected where moderate chromium content (8–10%) and excellent thermal stability are required.

ASTM A182 F9 Chemical Composition (%)

Element Requirement
Carbon (C) ≤ 0.15
Chromium (Cr) 8.00 – 10.00
Molybdenum (Mo) 0.90 – 1.10
Manganese (Mn) ≤ 0.60
Silicon (Si) ≤ 1.00
Phosphorus (P) ≤ 0.035
Sulfur (S) ≤ 0.040

All chemical limits strictly comply with ASTM A182 Grade F9 requirements.

Mechanical Properties of ASTM A182 F9

Property Minimum Requirement
Tensile Strength ≥ 585 MPa
Yield Strength ≥ 415 MPa
Elongation ≥ 20%

Mechanical properties may vary depending on section thickness and heat treatment condition.

Heat Treatment Requirements

ASTM A182 F9 forgings are typically supplied in the Normalized and Tempered (N&T) condition.

Proper heat treatment ensures:

  • Stable microstructure

  • Required mechanical strength

  • Long-term reliability in high-temperature service

Dimensions & Tolerances

Dimensions of ASTM A182 F9 forgings are manufactured according to applicable standards, including:

  • ASME B16.5 / ASME B16.47 – Pipe Flanges

  • ASME B16.11 – Forged Fittings

  • MSS Standards or Project-Specific Drawings

    Testing & Inspection

Each ASTM A182 F9 forging may undergo the following inspections:

    • Chemical composition analysis

    • Tensile testing

    • Hardness testing

    • Non-destructive testing (UT / MT, if specified)

    • Dimensional and visual inspection

Mill Test Certificates (EN 10204 3.1) are normally provided with each shipment.

Applications of ASTM A182 F9 Forgings

ASTM A182 F9 forgings are widely used in demanding high-temperature environments, including:

    • Power plant piping systems

    • High-temperature steam service

    • Oil refineries

    • Petrochemical processing units

    • Pressure vessels and valves

    • High-temperature flanges and fittings
