ASTM A312 TP316 and TP316L

are designated with UNS S31600 and UNS S31603, respectively. Although more expensive, pipes made of TP316/ TP316L have higher level corrosion resistance than that ofTP304/ TP304L. They can be used for a diversified range of corrosive chemical process piping which involves inks, rayon, photographic chemicals, paper, textiles, bleaches, and rubber.

A312 TP316L is the low carbon version of A312 TP316 stainless. With the addition of molybdenum, the steel is popular for use in severe corrosion environments due to the materials immunity from boundary carbide precipitation (sensitisation). A312 TP316L material is widely used in heavy gauge welded components and weld annealing is only required where the material is for use in high stress environments. TP316L has an extensive variety of uses especially in marine applications due to the materials high corrosion resistance. ASTM A312 TP316L Heat Treatment

All pipes shall be furnished in the heat-treated condition in accordance with the required heat-treating temperature and cooling requirements, pipes shall be individually quenched in water or rapidly cooled by other means (direct quenched).

The pipe shall be free of scale and contaminating exogenous iron particles. Pickling, blasting, or surface finishing is not mandatory when the pipe is bright annealed.

In addition to the implicit limitation of wall thickness for seamless pipe imposed by the limitation on weight in Specification A999/A999M, the wall thickness for seamless and welded pipe at any point shall be within the tolerances specified in Table 3, except that for welded pipe the weld area shall not be limited by the “Over” tolerance. The wall thickness and outside diameter for inspection for compliance with this requirement for pipe ordered by NPS and schedule number is shown in Table X1.1.
