Standard 5052 plate flanges are normally machined from ASTM B209 Aluminum Alloy 5052 sheet or plate. Flange dimensions can follow ASME B16.5 dimensional patterns, EN 1092-4 or approved customer drawings.

The applicable pressure rating must be confirmed according to the material temper, flange geometry, design pressure, temperature, gasket, bolting and governing piping code.

What Is Aluminum Alloy 5052?

5052 aluminum is a non-heat-treatable aluminum-magnesium alloy containing magnesium as its principal alloying element, with a controlled chromium addition.

The alloy develops increased strength through cold working rather than solution heat treatment and artificial aging. It offers good forming characteristics, weldability, fatigue resistance and corrosion resistance, particularly in saltwater and humid environments. It is commonly supplied in sheet, plate and tube forms.

5052 Aluminum Slip-On Flanges

A 5052 aluminum slip-on flange has a bore larger than the connecting pipe outside diameter. The pipe is inserted through the flange and normally joined by fillet welding.

Slip-on flanges can be manufactured with:

  • Flat face
  • Raised face
  • Hubbed construction
  • Plate-type construction
  • ASME bolt-hole pattern
  • PN bolt-hole pattern
  • Custom bore and bolt circle

The inquiry should state the actual pipe outside diameter and wall thickness so that the flange bore and weld arrangement can be correctly machined.

5052 Aluminum Blind Flanges

A 5052 aluminum blind flange is used to close the end of a pipe, vessel nozzle, valve or equipment connection.

Blind flanges are well suited to plate machining because they do not require an integral forged hub. Available designs include:

  • Flat-face blind flange
  • Raised-face blind flange
  • O-ring groove blind flange
  • Inspection-port cover flange
  • Manway or equipment cover
  • Custom drilled blind plate

The required flange thickness should be established by the selected standard or an approved engineering calculation.

5052 Weld Neck Flanges

A weld neck flange normally includes an integral tapered hub that transfers piping loads into the flange body.

However, ASTM B247-25 does not list UNS A95052 among its covered forging alloys. The current alloy list includes grades such as 1100, 3003, 5083 and 6061, but not 5052. Therefore, a 5052 weld neck flange should not be advertised as an ASTM B247 5052 forging.

Custom 5052 weld neck flanges may be considered when:

  1. The customer provides an approved drawing.
  2. The raw-material form and temper are clearly defined.
  3. The manufacturing route is accepted by the project engineer.
  4. The pressure design is independently verified.
  5. Welding and inspection requirements are specified.

For a standard one-piece forged weld neck flange, consider our 6061-T6 Aluminum Flanges or a project-approved ASTM B247 5083 flange.

ASTM B209 Aluminum Plate

ASTM B209 covers aluminum and aluminum-alloy flat sheet, coiled sheet and plate in specified alloys and tempers. It is the appropriate raw-material framework for plate-machined 5052 slip-on, blind and flat flanges.

Common 5052 plate tempers include:

  • 5052-O for higher formability
  • 5052-H32 for increased strength with good formability
  • Other project-specified H tempers

The exact temper should be selected according to the machining, welding, strength and forming requirements of the flange.

ASME B16.5 Dimensional

ASME B16.5 covers pressure-temperature ratings, materials, dimensions, tolerances, marking and testing for pipe flanges and flanged fittings from NPS 1/2 through NPS 24. It also limits standard flange construction to specified cast, forged or plate product forms.

A 5052 flange may be machined to an ASME B16.5:

  • Outside diameter
  • Bolt-circle diameter
  • Bolt-hole arrangement
  • Bore
  • Facing geometry
  • Overall thickness pattern

However, dimensional compatibility does not automatically give a 5052 flange the same pressure-temperature rating as a steel or listed forged-material flange.

A technically correct description is:

Aluminum Alloy 5052-H32 Plate Flange manufactured from ASTM B209 plate, with dimensions based on ASME B16.5 and pressure rating verified by the project designer.

EN 1092-4 Aluminum Flanges

EN 1092-1 applies to steel flanges and should not be used as the main product standard for 5052 aluminum flanges.

The appropriate European dimensional framework for aluminum-alloy flanges is EN 1092-4. It covers PN-designated aluminum-alloy flanges from DN15 to DN600 and PN10 to PN63, including flange types, facings, dimensions, tolerances, bolting, marking and material requirements.

The selected 5052 material and temper must still be checked against the adopted standard edition or approved by the project engineer.

Does ASTM B247 cover Aluminum Alloy 5052?

No. The current ASTM B247 alloy list does not include UNS A95052. A flange should therefore not be described as an ASTM B247 5052 forging.
