Aluminium Alloy 6063
Aluminium alloy 6063 is a medium strength alloy commonly referred to as an architectural alloy. It is normally used in intricate extrusions.
It has a good surface finish, high corrosion resistance, is readily suited to welding and can be easily anodised. Most commonly available as 6063 T6 temper, in the T4 condition it has good formability.
6063 Aluminum alloy
6063 aluminum is a top choice for architectural materials, so much so that it is often referred to as “architectural aluminum”. It has an excellent response to extrusion, where 6063 aluminum is easily drawn into constant-cross-sectional shapes such as bars and tubing. It holds a good surface finish for decorative parts and resists corrosion more effectively than other 6xxx alloys. Its improved corrosion resistance comes from the lack of copper in its elemental composition, which is, nominally 0.7% Mg, 0.4% Si, and 98.9% Al.
Its density is the same as 6061 aluminum (2.7 g/cm3, 0.0975 lb/in3), and it can be similarly heat-treated with 6063-T6 being the most common temper. While this alloy does not differ from 6061 aluminum in many ways, its lower strength and better corrosion resistance make 6063 aluminum a better choice for extrusion projects. It can be formed into complex shapes with great surface finishes that do not weather easily, and these advantages make 6063 the most popular alloy to extrude.
