ASTM A860 High-Strength Butt Welding Pipe Fittings | WPHY 52, 60, 65, 70

ASTM A860 covers high-yield-strength ferritic steel butt-welding pipe fittings, manufactured in seamless, welded, or fabricated construction, for use in high-pressure oil & gas transmission and distribution systems.

We supply ASTM A860 WPHY 52, WPHY 60, WPHY 65, and WPHY 70 fittings, fully compliant with ASME B16.9, MSS SP-75, and project specifications.

ASTM A860 Specification Overview

ASTM A860 applies to wrought high-strength carbon steel fittings designed for demanding pipeline applications.

  • Manufacturing: Seamless / Welded / Fabricated
  • Standards: ASME B16.9, B16.28, MSS SP-75
  • Application: High-pressure oil & gas pipelines

For non-standard fittings, requirements follow ASTM A960/A960M Supplementary Requirement S58.

ASTM A860 Grades (WPHY Series)

Grade Yield Strength
WPHY 42 ≥ 42 ksi
WPHY 46 ≥ 46 ksi
WPHY 52 ≥ 52 ksi
WPHY 60 ≥ 60 ksi
WPHY 65 ≥ 65 ksi
WPHY 70 ≥ 70 ksi

We manufacture and supply:

  • Elbows (LR / SR)
  • Tees (Equal & Reducing)
  • Reducers (Concentric / Eccentric)
  • Caps
  • Custom fittings

Example: ASTM A860 WPHY52 Tee (MSS SP-75)

Dimensions & Thickness

  • Standards: ASME B16.9, B16.28, MSS SP-75
  • Size Range: Up to NPS 60
  • Thickness:
    Sch 10, 20, 40, STD, 60, 80, XS, 100–160, XXS

ASTM A860 Chemical Composition

ASTM A860 fittings are made from fully killed steel with controlled composition.

  • Carbon (C): ≤ 0.30
  • Phosphorus (P): ≤ 0.035
  • Sulfur (S): ≤ 0.035
  • Alloy elements: As required

ASTM A860 Chemical composition

✔ Product analysis is performed per heat
✔ Conforms to ASTM A960/A960M tolerances
✔ Testing in accordance with ASTM A751

👉 All WPHY grades share similar base composition with controlled variations.

Mechanical Properties (ASTM A370)

  • Tensile testing required per heat
  • Specimens taken after final heat treatment
Property Requirement
Yield Strength 42–70 ksi (by grade)
Tensile Strength Higher than yield
Elongation As specified

ASTM A860 Mechanical Property

Notch Toughness (Impact Testing)

ASTM A860 fittings must meet strict low-temperature toughness requirements:

  • Test method: Charpy V-notch
  • Test temperature: −50°F (−46°C)
  • Tests include:
    • Base metal (3 specimens)
    • Weld metal (3 specimens)

✔ Specimens aligned with metal flow direction
✔ Full-size specimens preferred

Hardness Requirements

  • Maximum hardness: 22 HRC (235 HBW)

👉 Critical for sour service (H₂S environments) to prevent cracking.

Heat Treatment

All ASTM A860 fittings must be heat treated:

  • Normalizing
  • Quenching & Tempering (Q&T)
  • Stress relieving

Requirements per ASTM A960/A960M:

  • Cooling below critical temperature before heat treatment
  • Controlled furnace conditions
  • Full heat treatment records

Dimensional Standards

  • NPS ≤ 14 → ASME B16.9
  • NPS 14–60 → MSS SP-75

Applications

ASTM A860 fittings are widely used in:

  • Oil & gas transmission pipelines
  • Offshore platforms
  • Petrochemical plants
  • High-pressure pipeline systems
  • Sour service pipelines
