ASTM A860 WPHY 65 is a high-strength, low-alloy steel grade used for manufacturing pipe fittings intended for high-pressure and high-temperature service in various industries.

ASTM A860 is a standard specification for wrought high-strength ferritic steel butt-welding fittings. These fittings are intended for use in high-pressure gas and oil transmission and distribution systems. The “WPHY” designation stands for “Wrought Pipe High Yield,” indicating that the fittings are designed to provide high strength and yield properties.

The “65” in ASTM A860 WPHY 65 refers to the minimum yield strength of the material in ksi (thousands of pounds per square inch), which is approximately 65 ksi.

ASTM A860 WPHY 65 Pipe Fittings

ASTM A860 is the standard specification for wrought high-strength ferritic steel butt-welding fittings of seamless and electric fusion-welded construction. These pipe fittings shall be furnished in accordance with the dimensions of ASME B16.9(for sizes NPS 14 and smaller) or MSS SP 75(for sizes NPS 16 through NPS 48). They can be further categorized into 6 grades: WPHY 42, WPHY 46, WPHY 52, WPHY 60, WPHY 65, WPHY 70. Pipe fittings manufactured to ASTM A860 are usually used with API 5L line pipes and ASTM A694 high-strength forged flanges in high-pressure gas and oil transmission and distribution systems.

All fittings shall be heat treatment by one of the methods of normalizing, quenching, tempering or stress relieving. The regular tests & inspections mainly include radiographic examination, ultrasonic test, Charpy V-Notch test, hardness test, etc. Especially, butt-weld tees manufactured by cold forming process shall be liquid penetrant or magnetic particle examined.

The high-strength pipe fittings of ASTM A860 shall be made from fully killed fine-grain material made by a melting process that is intended to produce rounded, well dispersed, fine sulphide inclusions, that promote good notch toughness, assists in the resistance to hydrogen induced cracking, and for weldability suitable for field welding. The starting raw material may consist of plate, sheet, forgings, bar, seamless and fusion-welded pipes.

MSS SP-75  Specification for High Test,Wrought,Butt-Welding Fittings

MSS SP-75 specification covers factory-made, seamless and electric welded carbon and low alloy steel, butt-welding fittings for use in high pressure gas and oil transmission and distribution systems, including pipelines, compressor stations, metering and regulating stations, and mains.

SCOPE 
1.1 This specification covers factory-made,seamless and electric fusion-welded carbon and low-alloy steel,butt-welding fittings for use in high pressure gas and oil transmission and distribution systems,including pipelines,compressor stations,metering and regulating stations and mains.  

1.2 This Standard Practice governs dimensions,tolerances,ratings,testing,materials,chemical and tensile properties,heat treatment, notch toughness properties,manufacture and marking for high-test,butt-welding fittings NF’S 60 and smaller. Dimensional requirements for NPS 14 and smaller are provided by reference to ASME B16.9.  

1.3 The term “welding fittings” applies to buttwelding fittings such as elbows,segments of elbows,return bends,caps,tees,single-or multiple-outlet extruded headers,reducers,and factory-welded extensions and transition sections.
