What Is Aluminum Alloy 6061-T6?

6061 aluminum is a heat-treatable aluminum-magnesium-silicon alloy known for its combination of strength, machinability, corrosion resistance and weldability.

The T6 temper is produced through solution heat treatment followed by artificial aging. It provides higher strength than annealed 6061-O and naturally aged 6061-T4.

Typical characteristics include:

  5. Good anodizing response

Hydro identifies 6061 as a commonly available heat-treatable alloy and notes that welding is practical, although welds in the T6 condition may lose strength unless suitable re-heat treatment and aging are performed.

6061-T6 Aluminum Elbows

90° Long-Radius Elbow

A 6061-T6 long-radius elbow normally has a centerline radius of approximately 1.5 times the nominal pipe diameter.

LR elbows provide a smoother change in flow direction and are commonly selected where reducing turbulence and pressure loss is important.

90° Short-Radius Elbow

A short-radius elbow normally has a centerline radius of approximately one nominal pipe diameter.

SR elbows are used where installation space is limited. The sharper direction change should be considered during piping-system design.

Custom 3D and 5D Bends

Custom 3D and 5D aluminum pipe bends provide a larger bending radius than standard LR elbows.

They are manufactured according to approved drawings and should be specified by:

  • Tangent length
  • Minimum finished wall thickness

6061 Aluminum Tees

Available tee configurations include:

A 6061 equal tee has the same run and branch diameter. A reducing tee connects a smaller branch to a larger main run.

A product should only be described as a seamless formed tee when the actual manufacturing process produces the component without a fusion-welded seam.

6061 Aluminum Reducers and Caps

For an eccentric reducer, the required orientation should be identified as:

ASTM B361 and ASME B16.9

ASTM B361-16(2024) covers factory-made wrought aluminum and aluminum-alloy welding fittings. Permitted manufacturing operations include pressing, rolling, extrusion, bending and fusion welding, using approved wrought starting-material forms such as bar, forging, plate, seamless pipe or seamless tube.

ASME B16.9-2024 covers overall dimensions, tolerances, ratings, testing and marking for factory-made wrought butt-welding fittings from NPS 1/2 through NPS 48.

The standards serve different purposes:

DIN 2605-1 Dimensional Requests

DIN 2605-1 was a standard for steel butt-welding elbows and bends. It has been withdrawn and replaced by European standards for steel fittings. It is not an aluminum fitting material standard.

Where a legacy project requires DIN 2605 geometry, the fitting can be evaluated against an approved customer drawing.

The correct description is:

6061 aluminum elbow manufactured to an approved drawing based on legacy DIN 2605 dimensions.

It should not be described as a fully compliant DIN 2605-1 aluminum fitting.

Does ASTM B361 cover 6061-T6 fittings?

ASTM B361 covers factory-made wrought aluminum and aluminum-alloy welding fittings. Compliance must be confirmed against the alloy, temper, product type and ordered standard edition.

Can 6061 fittings use ASME B16.9 dimensions?

Yes. ASME B16.9 may be used as the dimensional pattern, but it does not independently establish the 6061 material condition or pressure capability.

Is DIN 2605-1 applicable to aluminum elbows?

No. DIN 2605-1 was a withdrawn steel elbow standard. Legacy dimensions may only be used through an approved project drawing.

Does welding reduce 6061-T6 strength?

Yes. Welding can reduce strength in the weld and heat-affected zone. Finished-joint properties must be evaluated according to the applicable design and welding requirements.

What is the difference between an elbow and a 3D or 5D bend?
