Spade and Spacers are normally referred to as Line Blinds. which has the similar function as a Spectacle Blind . The Spade or Spacer is fitted in the line between two flanges and is bolted in place. The Spacer is used when the line is required open and the Paddle Blind or Spade is installed when the line is required blocked or closed. To change it from open to closed, only half the bolts need to be removed and the Spade or Spacer is swapped over. The removed bolts are then installed and tightened. The handle protrudes from the pipe and provides an indicator of whether a Spade or Spacer is installed.For smaller Spades and Spacers it is common for the Spacer to have a hole in the handle and the Spade or Paddle blind to have no hole. For larger sizes Spectacle Blinds can be very bulky and occupy a lot of space so Spades and Spacers are preferred.
It is used usually for maintenance when it is required to isolate a section of pipe or isolate a device. Because this is a semi-permanent isolation it is very safe and safety is often the mentality behind the use of a Spade and Spacer in maintenance operations. Compared to a valve they are cheap and robust.
Spacer flange is machined from a single piece of metal that is cut to match the pipe size, fit between two pipe flanges and requires an additional gasket when it is installed.
Spade Flange are basically the same as Spectacle Blinds, except that both are not attached to each other.
Spade Flange be applied in systems where maintenance is often not necessary, or in applications with large pipe sizes.
Spade Flange, Spades and Ring Spacers should be made from a plate or forging specification, approved for use by ASME B31.3, of essentially the same chemical composition as the mating flanges and piping involved.
SPACER RING & SPADE FLANGE
In the oil and chemical process industries, a spade is a round piece of metal with a small tab that is placed in between two pipe flanges to give positive isolation from the center, usually to prevent cross contamination between fluids or to allow work on the line..

2 GENERAL
2.1 Definitions
2.1.1 Figure-8 Blank. A figure-8 blank (also called a spectacle blank) is a pressure-retaining plate with one solid end and one open end connected with a web or tie bar (see Fig. 1). 2.1.2 Paddle Blank. A paddle blank is similar to the solid end of a figure-8 blank. It has a plain radialhandle. It is generally used in conjunction with a paddle spacer in large sizes
