What Is Aluminum Alloy 5052?
Aluminum 5052 is a non-heat-treatable aluminum-magnesium alloy containing approximately 2.2–2.8% magnesiumand 0.15–0.35% chromium.
It is widely used where a combination of formability, weldability, fatigue resistance and corrosion resistance is required.
The main characteristics of 5052 aluminum include:
- Good forming and bending performance
- Good weldability
- Moderate mechanical strength
- Good fatigue resistance
- Good resistance to marine atmospheres
- Low material density
- Good thermal conductivity
5052 cannot be strengthened by conventional solution heat treatment and artificial aging. Its strength is increased mainly through cold working.
Mechanical properties depend on the temper, product form, thickness and fabrication process. Properties listed for sheet or plate should not automatically be applied to formed or welded pipe fittings.
5052 Aluminum Elbows
90° Long-Radius Elbow
A 5052 aluminum 90-degree long-radius elbow changes the direction of a piping system by 90 degrees.
The standard long-radius centerline is generally 1.5 times the nominal pipe diameter. LR elbows provide a smoother flow transition and are commonly selected where pressure loss and turbulence need to be reduced.
90° Short-Radius Elbow
A short-radius elbow normally has a centerline radius equal to approximately one nominal pipe diameter.
SR elbows are suitable for compact piping layouts where installation space is limited.
Custom-Angle Elbows
In addition to 45°, 90° and 180° fittings, we can manufacture custom angles such as:

5052 Aluminum Tees

ASTM B241 may specify the seamless 5052 pipe used as the starting material for a formed elbow.
ASTM B361 is the finished aluminum welding-fitting specification. Compliance should be confirmed against the alloy, temper and product type listed in the ordered edition.
ASME B16.9 provides the dimensional framework but does not independently establish the aluminum material grade.
